Generation No. 2 

MOLLY (MARY) GRAY was born October 8, 1786 in Thornford Parish Dorset, and died February 28, 1869 in Thornford Parish Dorset. She met ABEL MOORE in Thornford Parish Dorset, son of JAMES MOORE and BETTY EYERS. 

   In the 1861 census Mary gives her age as 73 and is Living on her own with her grandson Absolem Gray staying with her. She is described as a pauper and unmarried. Her Cause of Death: Old Age Not Certified, James Gray Present at the death in Thornford

   Abel died April 24, 1859 in Thornford Parish Dorset, at his death Able is described as a farm laborer. Abel Was born about 1770/1 In Thornford or Sherbourne He married Mary Ryall in Thornford on 26th December 1792 (witness Wm Dyer Wm Ryall). He had two sons from this marriage. James Moore brn 13/10/1793 in Thornford and Edmund Moore brn 15/5/1796 Thornford. Mary Then died and was buried in Thornford 17/10/1798.

   Abel Then Married Sarah Hannam in Thornford 19/10/1801 (wit John Hannam Wm Dyer) and had 3 more children Abel Moore Jnr 1/10/1802, William Moore 11/12/1808 and Arthur Moore 6/3/1805.

   Sarah then died and was buried in Thornford 19/3/1809.

   Abel then lives with Mary Gray who is described in the 1851 census as his niece. Her mother was Betty Hannam sister of Sarah Hannam Abel's 2nd wife. Abel & Mary then have 11 Children all described in the parish records as Baseborn or bastard children of Mary Gray & Abel Moore.

   In a census of Thornford in 1821 described as a Widower. Abel gives his age as 52 and is a laborer. He is living with Mary Gray aged 33 his son Abel Moore aged 19 William Moore aged 13 Thomas Gray aged 10 Isaac Gray aged 9 Henry Gray aged 7 and Susanah Gray aged4.

   In 1841 the census gives Abels age as 70 he is still described as a laborer he is still living in Thornford with Mary Gray aged 54 Mary Gray Jnr aged 18 Silas Gray aged 16 Eliza Gray aged 14 Elizabeth Gray aged 11 and Edwin Gray 10 Months Grandson and Bastard child of Mary Gray Jnr.

   In the 1851 census Abel is aged 80 and described as a Pauper He is living with Mary Gray aged 64 who is described as his niece & housekeeper .Also their Grandson Edward Gray aged 10.

    The Parish Accounts book in the Dorset county Records office PE/TFd 5/4 Shows an entry for March to April 1817 6 shillings was paid for new shoes for Abel's boy & 10 shillings for a pair of stockings and stuff for a smock frock for the same boy

THOMAS GRAY (ex MOLLY GRAY and ABEL MOORE) was born December 25, 1810 in Thornford Parish Dorset, and died October 24, 1869 in Woodhouselee, Goulburn, N.S.W. Australia. He married HANNAH HUNT December 31, 1832 in Thornford Parish Dorset (Witnesses John Wallcock & Harriet Wallbridge), daughter of GEORGE HUNT and EDITH BISHOP. Hannah was born June 23, 1811 in Dorset, and died April 11, 1897 in Woodhouselee Australia.

    Thomas Gray was born in 1810 and Baptized 25/12/1810 in Thornford Dorset. Son of Able Moore and Mary Gray. In the parish Records he is described as the Bastard son of Mary Gray & Able Moore. He married Hannah Hunt in Thornford on 31/12/1832 . They had ten children in all but two died in infancy.

    Thomas & Hannah arrived in Sydney Australia With their eight surviving children on the Duke of Roxburgh on the 13th August 1849. They lived at Woodhouselee near Goulburn. Thomas died 24/10/1889 aged 79 at Woodhouselee & Hannah died 11/4/1897.Both are buried in the Pejar Cemetery in the grounds of St Stephens Church (Church of England) In 1838 at the birth of his son Job Thomas, Thomas gives his occupation as Labourer and is living in Thornford

At the birth of her first son, called Job Thomas, Hannah made her mark so could not write her name

ISSAC GEORGE GRAY  (ex MOLLY GRAY and ABEL MOORE) was born March 17, 1812 in Thornford Parish Dorset, and died June 16, 1895 in Australia.   Isaac had already had a son called Abel who was born in 1839 but died of Chicken Pox 2nd July 1840 aged 10 months in Thornford. On Abels death certificate Isaac gives his occupation as Laborour

  In 1838 Isaac puts his mark on his son Isaac's birth certificate and gives his occupation as Labourer. in 1838 Isaac and Sarah are in Thornford. They are also in Thornford in 1845 for the Birth of their son Noah

  On the birth certificates of her Sons Isaac and Noah Sarah makes her mark X so could not sign her name.
      (They emigrated on the Adamant)

He married CHARLOTTE GOULD February 9, 1835 in Thornford Parish Dorset, daughter of RICHARD GOULD and CHARLOTTE GILES. She was born January 13, 1811 in Thornford Parish Dorset, and died July 22, 1877 in Thornford Parish Dorset.

    1846 at the birth of his daughter Susan, Henry was a Laborer

    In the 1861 Census Henry gives his age as 47 and occupation as Agricultural Labourer he is living with his wife Charlotte aged 51and six of his children also his grandson Henry son of Wyndham

    In the 1861 Census Charlotte is aged 51 and is described as wife of agricultural labourer she is living with her husband Henry and six of her children also her Grandson Henry aged 1 son of Wyndham

Charlotte could only make her mark when she Registered Henry James Birth so was probably illiterate

    She died in 1877 Aged 67 of Dropsy in Thornford Dorset, Certified by Edward Farmer MD Henry Gray Widower of Charlotte Present at Death

In 1881 Census Henry is living on his own aged 66 a Widower in Thornford

In the 1861 census Silas gives his age as 36 and is an agricultural Laborour he is living with his wife Charlotte who also gives her age as 36 and his daughter Mary aged 15, his sons Absolom (Written as Albert) age 12, Alfred age 9, Job age 6, and Daughter Betsey ( Written as Bessy) aged 1

      In the 1861 census Charlotte Barrett is aged 36 and is living in Thornford with her family and is described as wife of agricultural labourer.  In the 1881 Census Charlotte is aged 56 . She gives her occupation as Agricultural Laborour. Burial: October 6, 1890, Thornford

    In the 1881 Census David is aged 12, he is known by his second name Charles and he is living with his Mother and Father and Family and gives his occupation as General labourer. 

SELINA GRAY (ex ANN GRAY and EDWARD TAYLOR) was born December 21, 1834.

On the Death Certificate of her son Henry 25th April 1853 in the Union workhouse Sherbourne Selina gives her occupation as Glover.  Child of SELINA GRAY is HENRY IBBERT GRAY, b. January 13, 1852; d. April 28, 1853, Union Workhouse Sherbourne, Henry died aged 6 months at union workhouse Sherbourne of Mesenteric Disease

ISAAC GRAY (ex ISAAC GEORGE GRAY and SARAH HUNT) was born March 10, 1838 in Thornford (bapt April 16, 1838 Thornford), and died January 4, 1910 in Port Pirie. He married MARTHA BOWDEN April 12, 1858 in THornford Parish Dorset. She was born July 25, 1839, and died November 24, 1904 in Port Pirie.

Isaac George Bishop Gray Was born in Thornford 11/3/1887 and married Martha Bowden on 12/4/1858 in Thornford.

    At 1841 Census - Easton Aged 3. at 1851 Census - Thornford Aged 13

Isaac Geoge Bishop Gray ( Known as George in Australia) followed his elder brothers Samual & William Gray to Adelaide South Australia, arriving on the James Jardine With his wife Martha on 29/6/1859. He was followed soon after by his parents Isaac George & Sarah Jane Gray & the rest of their 20 children

ABEL GRAY (ex ISAAC GEORGE GRAY and SARAH HUNT) was born January 22, 1841 in Easton, Hants England (bapt March 7, 1841, Easton Hants), and died January 17, 1925 in Port Elliot S.A. He married CHARLOTTE CAINES November 7, 1858 in Thornford Parish Dorset. She was born October 29, 1833 in Walcot, Bath , Somerset, and died August 16, 1929 in Hindmarsh Valley S.A.

    Abel and his wife Charlotte Caines arrived in South Australia on the 29 June 1859 on the James Jardine
