Mary Riordan’s family was from the townland of Clashykinleen West in the Catholic parish of Boherbue and civil parish of Kilmeen (Duhallow) in County Cork (in the Catholic Diocese of Kerry). On a modern map, one can see Clashykinleen West and Glashakinleen West, about 500 metres from each other and about 8 kilometres west of Newmarket. At the time of Griffith’s valuation of tenements in County Cork in 1852, Clashykinleen West and Glashakinleen West were encompassed in the one townland of Clashykinleen West, and the two names appear to have been used interchangeably. Clashykinleen West covered an area of 449 English acres (1.81 square kilometres), not Irish acres, which are bigger than English acres. Riordans held tenements on just under half of this area and their landlord was Lord Lisle. Some of the evidence for Mary Riordan’s origin in Clashykinleen West (or Glashakinleen West) can be found in the following Boherbue Parish baptism records, available at the free website http://www.irishgenealogy.ie/:
Mary’s husband, Edmond Fitzgerald, was the baptism sponsor of John Riordan’s daughter Johanna in 1867. Parents’ address recorded as Glashakinleen; • Parents’ address recorded on the baptism certificates for the 5 children of Mary’s sister, Honora (Riordan) Shine, baptised between 1842 and 1851, was Clashykinleen (for the first four children) and Glashakinleen (for the 5th child). John Riordan and Margaret Riordan (probably John’s wife) were sponsors for two of their children; • Honora’s husband, John Shine, was baptism sponsor for Eugene Riordan’s daughter Margaret in 1857. Address for parents was recorded as Glashakinleen; • Honora or Johanna (Riordan) Shine (Honora and Johanna are interchangeable names) was baptism sponsor for Eugene Riordan’s daughter Mary in 1860. Address for parents was recorded as Glashakinleen; • Cornelius Riordan was baptism sponsor for John Riordan’s son John in 1846. Address for parents was recorded as Clashykinleen; • Jeremiah Riordan was baptism sponsor for Eugene Riordan’s son Eugene in 1853. Address for parents was recorded as Glashakinleen.
Clashykinleen and Glashakinleen are spelt in numerous different ways in the church records, including Gloshakeenleen, Glashakeenleen, Clashkinleen, Clashykinleen, Clashakeenleen and Glashkeenleen. No marriage records are available for Boherbue parish before 1863.
Interestingly, at www.youtube.com/watch?v=ROduBx4a03Y there is a folk song called “The girl from Glashakinleen”, which is supposedly about a girl called Mary Riordan from Glashakinleen West. It is probably not about our Mary Riordan, but about a Mary Riordan from a later generation of the Riordan family.

Mary’s Siblings
We already know that one of Mary’s siblings was Honora (Riordan) Shine, whose husband and children migrated to Queensland in 1863 after Honora died, and 13 years before Andrew Fitzgerald migrated to Queensland.
No baptism records are available for Mary Riordan’s direct family, but baptism records for the next generation are available on the website www.irishgenealogy.ie/. Based on these records, Mary Riordan’s parents probably also had the following children: - Cornelius, John, Eugene, Ellen and Jeremiah.
The age order of the siblings cannot be determined from the available records, but Mary was probably the eldest or close to the eldest, born about 1810.
The following may also have been siblings of Mary Riordan, based on sponsors or parents on Clashykinleen baptism records - Catherine, James, Dermott, Michael, William and Timothy.
If not siblings, they were closely related, as they all came from the small area of about 850 square metres occupied by the Riordans at Clashykinleen.

Mary’s Mother...
Most likely maiden name for Mary’s mother is Hickey, because Mary Riordan’s generation of the Riordan family has more baptism sponsorship links in Clashykinleen with the Hickey family than any other family (see below). Hickeys do not appear to be linked to Riordans through marriage in Mary’s generation, so were probably cousins of Mary Riordan. Other families also linked to Riordans multiple times through baptism sponsorships are Kennedys and Murphys, but in far fewer instances.
You would expect the surname of cousins from the mother’s brothers (all the same) to come up more often in baptism sponsorships than surnames of cousins from the father’s sisters (variable) or cousins from the mother’s sisters (variable). Obviously, cousins from the father’s brothers would have the surname Riordan.
Bridget (nee Hickey) Murphy had John and Catherine Riordan as sponsors for baptism of son Michael in 1833;
Mary (nee Hickey) Murphy had Timothy and Honora Riordan as sponsors for baptism of daughter Catherine in 1837;
Andrew Hickey had J. and Honora Riordan as sponsors for baptism of son John in 1841;
Catherine Hickey was sponsor for Cornelius Riordan’s son John in 1843;
Honora Hickey was sponsor for John Riordan’s son Timothy in 1853;
Margaret Hickey was sponsor for Cornelius Riordan’s daughter Johanna in 1858;
Mary Hickey was sponsor for John Riordan’s daughter Johanna in 1867.
Most likely first name is Ellen, based on Irish naming conventions (i.e. first daughter named after maternal grandmother, second daughter named after paternal grandmother, third daughter named after mother).
Evidence for Ellen being her name is...
The strongest evidence is that Ellen was definitely the first daughter of daughter Honora (Johanna); • Based on available baptism records, Ellen appears to be the second daughter of son Cornelius, although his wife’s name was also Ellen; • Based on available baptism records, Ellen appears to be the second daughter of son Jeremiah, although his wife’s name was also Ellen; • One of Mary Riordan’s sisters may have been Ellen (can’t verify whether she was the third daughter, but usually the third daughter would be named after the mother).
Other possibilities for her first name are Catherine (available baptism records suggest this was John’s second daughter) or Mary (available baptism records suggest this was Eugene’s second daughter).
Based on all of the above, the most likely name for Mary Riordan’s mother was Ellen Hickey.
Mary’s Father
Mary’s father’s name was almost certainly John, based on the following evidence: • Based on available baptism records, Cornelius’ eldest son was John, born in 1843 (following Irish naming conventions to name eldest son after paternal grandfather); • Based on available baptism records, Jeremiah’s eldest son was John, born in 1866; • Based on available baptism records, John’s eldest son was John, born in 1846; • Possibly departing from tradition, Honora’s eldest son was named John, born in 1842, but his father was also named John. • Griffiths valuation of 1852 shows the following leaseholders by the name of Riordan in the townland of Clashykinleen West - Jeremiah, John Jr, John Sr, Timothy and Owen (probably Eugene). The small tenements occupied by Riordans were all joined. John Riordan senior was almost certainly Mary Riordan’s father and the other Riordans were closely related.
Based on available available baptism records, Eugene’s first son was named Eugene, so Eugene is another possibility for the first name of Mary’s father.
However, there appears to be ample evidence, outlined above, that Mary’s father’s name was John Riordan.
Mary’s Uncles and Cousins?
Based on baptism records for the next generation, it is likely that Mary had a much younger brother named Jeremiah, who may have married rather late. Mary’s father’s name was almost certainly John and, as mentioned above, Jeremiahs’ eldest son was named John, which would follow Irish naming conventions. However, Mary may also have had a cousin named Jeremiah Riordan, whose father was Timothy Riordan. Timothy Riordan held two tenements at Clashykinleen in 1852, both with Jeremiah Riordan. Timothy Riordan’s name appears as a father only once in the available baptism records for Clashykinleen parish, for Cornelius Riordan, baptised on 21 June 1837. The earliest available Boherbue parish baptism records date to July 1833 and availability of records is patchy in the first few years after 1833. Rather than Timothy Riordan being a son of John Riordan senior, it seems more likely that he was a younger brother, and that this Cornelius was his youngest child and Jeremiah one of his eldest.
There was another John Riordan from Clashykinleen, apart from the John senior and John junior mentioned above. He had 10 children between 1858 and 1877. His eldest son was named Michael, so it is safe to assume that his father’s name was also Michael. This Michael Riordan was probably an uncle of Mary Riordan and this John Riordan was probably her cousin.
Honora Riordan’s husband and in-laws, the Shines
According to Griffiths’ valuation of tenements in county Cork in 1852, Honora Riordan’s husband, John Shine, shared two tenements in Clashykinleen with John Riordan Sr and John Riordan Jr. Another tenement was occupied by Patrick Shine Sr, Timothy Shine and Patrick Shine Jr. According to John Shine’s Queensland death certificate from 1867, his father’s name was Patrick Shine, so these three men were probably his father and brothers.
