Robert Septimus Fayers of Bildeston mar Elizabeth B Notcutt at St Nicholas Ipswich. [s]

(This has got to be the same couple, even with her middle name/ initial confusion, and clearly her surname is Notcutt.  Note that the mother of Charlotte Atkinson his second wife, was also a nee Notcutt, presumably related, as the name, although rare elsewhere, is clearly associated with the area).

Charlotte ATKINSON  [ 007 ]

===========================

24/9/1797 - Charlotte Atkinson bapt in Tackett St Independent Ipswich Suffolk to Charles and Deborah. [e]

This is c.1798 acc to the age/date at death. [c]

Her father was the Rev Charles Atkinson, and her mother Deborah Notcutt. [h]

1825 - Revd Atkinson, failing in health ...  [r]

July 1827 to June 1828 - A dau? Margaret born (in Suffolk) to Robert and Elizabeth? [b]

26/3/1829 - Berrington Paine, husb of Charlotte Atkinson's (recently decd) sister Lydia, writes a long `missionary' letter to Charlotte "care of Rev C Atkinson, Ipswich Suffolk" from Bellary (in the middle of India). [j]

1830 - Revd Atkinson died of paralytic stroke and Wm Notcutt became minister of Tacket St Ind.  [r]

7/2/1832 - A Joseph Aston married a Phoebe Atkinson in Ipswich. [s]

This is arguably Charlotte's sister Phebe (bapt 1808, here aged 24?), and that this Joseph Aston is the Joseph Aston who Charlotte Fayers (the daughter) came to SA with in 1849.  Aston is not a common name in the Ipswich area, or in Suffolk.  (Its big in Shropshire).

---------- MARRIED ----------

1835 - Charlotte born Bildeston Suffolk. [f][h]

(If she was "20" when married in Dec 1853 her birthdate would have been between Dec '32 and Dec '33 ??)

6/2/1839 - A "Charlotte wife of Robert Septimus Fayers" died aged 41, and was buried at Bildeston in the family altar tomb. [c]

Charlotte Atkinson FAYERS  [ 003 ]

==================================

1835 - Charlotte born Bildeston Suffolk. [f][h]

(If she was "20" when married in Dec 1853 her birthdate would have been between Dec '32 and Dec '33 ??)

27/11/1835 - A Charlotte Atkinson Fayers bapt at Hadleigh Independent Suffolk, to Robert Septimus and Charlotte. [e]

Born in Hadleigh but bapt in Bildeston?  Hadleigh is a town ap 12kms west of Ipswich, and Bildeston is a village ap 8kms NW of Hadleigh.

6/2/1839 - A "Charlotte wife of Robert Septimus Fayers" died aged 41, and was buried at Bildeston in the family altar tomb. [c]

7/6/1841 - In census of Hadleigh St Bildeston ("all that part which lies on the East side of the road from Hitcham to Hadleigh" -- the main B.1115 through Bildeston), Robert Fayers, 50 (implying born between 1787 and 1791), carpenter, born in Suffolk; Julia 20 (1817 to 1821) born Suffolk; Margaret 13; Elizabeth 10; Charlotte 6. [b]

18/11/1847 - A "Robert Septimus Fayers" died in Suffolk aged 47 and was buried in Bildeston in the family altar tomb. [c]

"Place death registered Cosford Suffolk". [g]

c.1847 - Charlotte (aged 12?) was possibly taken into the care of her mother's brother the Rev Theophilus Atkinson (a missionary?). [d]

All of her 1/2 siblings would have been 17+ at this time and probably living independent lives.

22/12/1848 - Sailed ex Falmouth (after ex London) on the "Sir Charles Forbes".  The ship is 364 tons, built in Aberdeen in 1824 (a convict transport to 1837), under Capt W. Prynne.  On the trip out the chief mate, and a boy, were lost overboard. [p] [q]

8/4/1849 - Arrived in SA (aged 14?) in the company of a Joseph (one ref says `Yates') Aston and his wife and 4 (or 7) children.  They are well down the passenger list, and Aston's cargo is (a bit mundane?) "6 boxes, 2 bundles, 1 cask", but nothing separate for Charlotte.  They are not on the "Assisted Immigrants" lists, and data suggests that they are private passengers. [i]

1850 - Became one of the first scholars, and then later a teacher, of the Payneham Methodist Sunday School. [d]

------------------- MARRIED --------------

7/12/1853 - Charlotte Atkinson Fayers, spinster, married William Gray, labourer, batchelor, at St Georges Anglican church (at Magill), both shown as aged 20, (but she was actually 18?).  She signed in full, but he did an "X - his mark".  Winesses were John and Martin Mail.  [n]

8/3/1911 - Died aged 76, wife of William Gray, gardener, Glynde, born Suffolk England, resided in the Commonwealth 62 years, 19 years old when married, cause of death "Carcinoma some months", died at Payneham Rd Glynde. [m]

/3/1911 - Buried in the Payneham cemetery. [u]

30/3/1911 - (Selected ex three sep obit notes, variously copied from the Advertiser or from the same source, includes many clear mistakes).

Died at Payneham recently, in her 78th year, one of the oldest residents, lived there for over 50 years, born at Ipswich Sussex(?) in 1834(?), arr in Ad 1848(?), in 1852(?) mar Mr Wm Gray of Gray's Hill Glynde, at St Georges Magill, (the youngest) dau of late Mr William(?) Fayers/ Flayers(?)/ Tayers(?) of Ipswich, and (in Chronicle) `great great grand niece of the late Lord Ashton.'  Her father died when she was a child, educated by her uncle Rev Theosephus(?) Atkinson a Sth African missionary.  Mrs Gray was one of the first scholars and teachers of the Payneham Methodist Sunday School, connected with it in 1850.  Leaving that church in 1879 she joined Salvation Army at its Sth Aust inauguration, connected with the WCTU for 17 yrs, (part of which) president of Payneham branch.  Also active worker in Norwood Mission Sunday School to within a few months of her death.  Mrs Gray wrote several poems, left 6 daus, 4 sons, 57 grandch, 83 grtgrandch.  Chronicle also elaborates on `many hymns and poems' she wrote, that she recd a letter from Queen Mary, and was visited by Tennyson while Gov of SA. [d]

Born in 1834, father Rev Theophius (or William) Fayers, brought up by her guardians the Hon Joseph and Lady Margaret Ashton. "They" arr in SA 1848 and all lived in a bark hut in Hindley St, later ran a boarding house for young ladies on the corner of South Rd and Manton St Hindmarsh, Charlotte was a thorough lady and always wore a lace bonnet, her mother was sister to the Hon Joseph Ashton of Ashton Hall and sister of Lord Ashton.  It is said in her teens she was locked in a room with her arranged suitor and after she was let out she ran away to marry her true love William Gray, who she taught to read and write and worked for Gwynnes Store as a bookkeeper and she had a very good education.  She wrote many poems, some for the coronation of King Edward, and recd a letter of thanks from Queen Mary, then the Princess of Wales.  (Same church stuff as above).  She was left money from the two Ashton families which bought her family home and land for the garden.  Later the land was motgaged to bring William's parents out from England. [k]

Other obit notes say mostly the same, using correct parents, but "arrived with the Ashton family, Joseph Ashton (and wife and children), that he was related to Charlotte's mother, and Joseph was a brother to Lord Ashton of Ashton Hall England, and refers to Charlotte's "...family home and market garden at Payneham Rd Glynde" and that she "passed away of cancer of the stomach ... aged 78, and was buried in the Payneham cemetery". [u]

It's hard to exactly reconcile these bits of information (probably largely oral, maybe from one or two close relatives who "heard" the stories first hand from Charlotte, maybe many years before her death).

IF the "Joseph Ashton" they keep referring to is really the Joseph ASTON who married Charlotte's mother's sister Phoebe, then Charlotte's mother would be a sister-IN-LAW to him, which is definitely "related", and sort of a "sister" as one claims, and Charlotte would be his niece(-in-law), but not clear how this becomes "great great grandniece" to a Lord Ashton.

LAW AND CRIMINAL COURTS.

POLICE COURT-ADELAIDE.

Monday, November 21.

[Before Mr. S. Beddome, P.M., and Mr. C. S. Hare, J.P.]

Charge of Arson.

Abel Gray, Arthur Grog, and Iitaachar Lloyd, were brought up on remand, charged with feloniously and maliciously setting fire to some premises, the property of Goodman Hart. The property in question was a slab nut, lath and plastered inside, and with a slate floor. It was now burnt to the ground. The hut had been built within three years from the present date. The land was enclosed with a post and rail fence. The door was simply latched, and not locked. Had never authorised the defendants to go there.

Thomas Coombe, farmer, Fifth Creek, deposed that the three defendants had been working for him, and he had cautioned them from going on Mr Hart's land. Found the hut was burnt down on Thursday morning, at which time the defendants asked what was the matter, about the fire, and also stated that the hut was standing when they left.

By Mr. Atkinson - About 5 o'clock on Thursday morning, saw a little fire on the site of the hut, which he (witness) found burnt to the ground. On Saturday saw the prisoner, who told him that they had set the chimney on fire accidentally, and put it out again, and that when they left the hut was standing.

By trie Court - Had simply cautioned them from cutting down any timber or barking trees on Hart's land, but did not object to their crossing the land on which the hut stood.

William Gay, farmer, Glynde, deposed that on Wednesday he saw the defendants cutting down wattles, about a hundred yards from the hut in question. The defendants assisted him to get a load of wood, and returned with him to his house. The youngest one slept at his house, and the other one came in to breakfast on the Thursday morn- ing.

By Mr. Ingleby - Hal been in the hut a great number of times. When the defendants went back with him they told him, that they had lighted a fire in the hut in preference to lighting one in the open air, and had taken more than nsual precautions. The chimney being foul, ignited, and when it was discovered to be on fire they set to work and put it out, afterwards pouring water upon the fire on the hearth, which they also extinguished. They were discharged, the Bench being of opinion that no evidence had been produced to show that the fire in question had been caused by their act ; or, even if it had been, that it was the result of a felonious and malicious intention.

LOCAL COURT-GLYNDE.

MONDAY, FEBRUARYS.

LIMITED JURISDICTION.-CTOTti.

LLOYD v. GRAY.-Action for ii. 18s. 4d., for a quantity of wattle bark. Defendant's wife attended and requested an adjournment, in consequence of the absence of her husband.

Granted. The costs to abide.

The JAMES JARDINE 1859 (Abel and George Gray’s ship)

When the James Jardine, arrived at Port Adelaide on 29 June 1859, she had taken 131 days to complete the trip. This 810 ton ship left with 352 people on board, but before she reached South Australian waters five children had been born and six people had died.

Upon arrival it was reported that 'the ship seemed well adapted for emigrants, being lofty between decks and well ventilated'. However, many complaints were made regarding the quality of the flour, 'which on inspection was found very bad, and from the statements of the Surgeon-Superintendent, the baker, and the Master of the ship, there was no doubt that it was from the beginning of the voyage of very inferior quality'. In the opinion of the Emigration Board some deduction should be made from the payment of freight on that account.

Still there were other problems at times during these long voyages. Two young women, sisters, who had sailed on the James Jardine, made a complaint against the Surgeon who on one occasion called them improper names. As it turned out these two girls had during the voyage, 'behaved in a most insubordinate manner and were in the constant habit of insulting the Surgeon and the Matron. They walked about the single women's apartment a great part of the night, and wished to be allowed to lie in bed during the day. They also had constantly and intentionally interrupted the evening prayers, and shocked the ears of well-behaved girls by profane cursing and swearing'.

It was proved to the satisfaction of the Immigration Board that their complaint against the Surgeon was quite unfounded and that, on the occasion referred to, he was vainly 'endeavouring to induce them to get out of bed after ten o'clock in the day'. Another complaint dealt with was the fact that the Captain of the ship had 'held such communication with one of the single women as to seriously interfere with proper discipline and decorum on board'. He was found guilty of 'conduct which had a direct tendency to encourage indecency and immorality'.
