c 1850 – A James Skinner (abt 20) married a Hannah (Steed??) (abt 27)   [q]

30/3/1851 - In the district described as "Dundale Dist ... lies between the Bells Yew district and outbounds of the parish of Tuttys Village or Hawkenbury and the Hastings Railway to Bush Houses, taking in the Bush Houses, Tuttys, Bayham Abbey and Lodge and Tollseye."  The family were shown as living in Hawkenbury.

    In the house were James (49) "Bricklayer" born Tonbridge, Sarah his wife (46) born Pembury, unm dau Harriet (19) "Servant" born Tonbridge, unm dau Sarah (17) "Servant" born Tonbridge, son Alfred (15) "Bricklayer" born Tonbridge, son George (12) "Labourer" born Tonbridge, and dau Mary (9) "Scholar" born Frant.  [g]

30/3/1851 - Also living in "Hawkenbury" was a William Skinner (24) "Bricklayer" born Speldhurst, his wife Kate (28) "Domestic" born Bassingham Lincs, and sons Stevenson (3) and John (1) both born Tonbridge  [g]

30/3/1851 - Also living in "Hawkenbury" was a James Skinner (21) "Bricklayer" born Tonbridge, his wife Harriett (28) "Domestic" born Tonbridge, and daus Emily (1) and Eliz (1m) both born Tonbridge  [g]

7/4/1861 - In Tonbridge there is a James Skinner, a Plasterer, bn Tonbridge (age 33 = bn c 1828), and his wife Hannah, bn Southborough (age 46 = bn c 1815), dau Esther, bn Tonbridge (age 10 = bn c 1851), and son Thomas, bn Tonbridge (age 8 = bn c 1853).  There is also two Steed son-in-laws.  [q]

7/4/1861 - Living at 3 Quarry Rd Tunbridge Wells, James Skinner (52, H, Builder, bn Southborough), Sarah his wife (57, bn Pembury), and their grandson Henry Martin (5, Scolar, bn TWs)  [q]

7/4/1861 - A Sarah Martin, 27 (= bn 1833/4), Servant, born TWs, was living in a big house in Edmonton Essex  [q]

1861 to 1866 - James emigrated to Aust  [q]+[k]

1863 - The William Martin who was 18 in 1881 and was living with grandparents James & Sarah Skinner in TWs, was born in TWs  [h]

2/1/1864 - Sarah's father Timothy died aged 89 at Tunbridge Wells, "grandfather of Henry Skinner of Braidwood and Mr George and Alfred Skinner of Queensland".  [j]

3/4/1871 - Living in "Hope Cottage", Springfield Rd, Groombridge (actually in parish of Withyham Sussex, just SW of TWs) was Sarah Martin (37, Head, Mar [not a widow], "Domesticated", bn Tonbridge, her son William (8, Scholar, bn Tonbridge), and her dau Kate (2, bn Withyham Ssx)  [r]

Oct to Dec 1871 - A Sarah Skinner married a Jesse Martin in Tunbridge Wells  [n]

    (This date doesn't fit the birth of the grandson Henry Martin abt 1856, and if this is the Sarah Martin above, what about the other two kids!!  Error?  What was Jesse Martin's parents names? Was his mother a Kate??)

3/4/1881 - Living at No 34 Albion Rd, Tunbridge Wells (LDS data says "Tonbridge" but that's only the Return Dist) is James Skinner (79) "Builder"  born in Southborough, his wife Sarah (76) born in Pembury.  With them is a "Grandson" William Martin (18) a "Grocers Asst", born in Tunbridge Wells.

    A Quinnell family lived next door at No 33.  William's (Snr) brother John married a Martha Quinnell.   [h]

3/4/1881 - Living at No 39 Albion Rd, Tunbridge Wells (LDS data says "Tonbridge" but that's only the Return Dist) is a William Skinner (54) "Bricklayer"  born Speldhurst, his wife Catherine (57) born in Bassingham Lincs, and two adult children Mary and Thomas.  [h]

3/4/1881 - Living at 9 Springfield Cottages, Tonbridge is a George Martin, widower (age 53 = bn c1824) general lab, and his dau Fanny (age 20 = bn c1861) servant, son Robert (age 18 = bn c1862) bricklayers lab, and two other daus, all born TWs  [h]

    (Is this the George Martin who mar a Frances Skinner Jun Qtr 1860?  Was dau Fanny named after mother?  Did James and Sarah have a dau named Frances or Fanny?  If this is right then Robert above would have to be twin to William Martin (also 18), the grandson staying at James' place for the census.  A Robert and a William Percival Martin were born in "Tunbridge" (Wells? dist?) in June qtr 1862, are in same Index Vol, but are 7 pages apart)

3/4/1881 - Living at "The Laundry" at Wellesbourne Mountford in WKS was a Sarah Martin (head, widow, 47, born TWs, laundress) and her dau Kate (13, born Groombridge SSX, laundrymaid) and one employee  [h]

Jul/Sep 1881 - A James Skinner died at Poplar MSX aged 78 (but none closer to TWs of a reasonable age).  [n]

Dec ¼ 1881 – A Sarah Martin married a John Hirons in the Stratford WKS Regn Dist  [t]

1882 - Listed in Kent Trade Directory as James Skinner, builder, Albion Rd  [m]
