28/2/1862 - Son John Henry born to Isaac Burgess, shoemaker of Kings Arms Yard SM, and Caroline his wife (bapt 9/3/1862)   [q]

 

Jan to Mar 1875 - A William Henry Cooper married a Mary Ann Colston in the Shepton Mallet regn district  [k]

 

17/1/1875 - William Henry Cooper (24, bach, Journeyman Painter, of Cowl St SM, father Charles Cooper deceased tailor), married Mary Ann Colston (23, spin, Silk Worker, of Lower Lane SM, father Peter Colston, plasterer) at the Wesleyan Chapel SM.  Both signed, witns Charles Charlton and Eliza Jane Colston  [n]

 

30/4/1875 – A Lucy Rosina Cooper was bapt at Bedminster SOM, father William, mother Mary Ann   [s]

 

12/2/1881 - Charles John Burgess's wife had a dau at Downside SM  [f]

 

3/4/1881 - Aged 19, John Burgess, born SM, a Stone Mason, living with his parents in Garston St Shepton   [h]

 

3/4/1881 - Mary Ann Cooper (nee Colston) aged 29, born SM, was living with her parents in Shepton  [h]

 

3/4/1881 – A William Cooper, Head, 28 (=bn 1853), bn Bedminster, a “Labourer on Steam Boat [Seaman]”, was living at “Full Moon Cott” in Bedminster SOM with his wife Mary Ann, 26 (=bn 1855), bn Bedminster, and dau Lucy Rosina, 5 (=bn 1876), bn Bedminster   [h]

 

28/4/1881 - A son born to the wife of William Henry Cooper at Lower Lane SM  [f]

 

25(26?)/5/1881 - William Henry Cooper, son of William Henry Cooper, died aged 1 month at Longbridge SM  [f]

 

26/5/1881 - William Henry Cooper, son of William Henry Cooper, a Railway Guard, died at 9 Longridge SM, aged 1 month, of "Atrophy", present at death mother MA Cooper (same address). Regd 31/5/1881  [g]

 

28/2/1883 - Ada Florence Cooper born  [a]

 

28/2/1883 - Ada Florence, dau of Mary Ann Cooper of Mill St Wincanton, born at Mill St Wincanton. Regd 10/4/1883 by mother.  There is no "Father" references on the certificate.  [e]

    (Oral history within the family suggests that Mary Ann’s husband William Henry Cooper disappeared from the scene about this time, possibly emigrating to America, but there’s no record).

 

28/2/1883 - "Ada Florence" (no surname noted like the following children) born 6am, listed under "John Henry & Mary Ann Burgess"  [d]

 

c 1884 - Around this time John, and Mary Ann Cooper (nee Colston), with her dau Ada Florence Cooper, set up a family home together in Garston St in Shepton   [guess]

    (John Henry ran his own business, had a horse & trap, but later lost it all and became a skilled stonemason, worked on Wells cathedral, walking there from Shepton, probably weekly)  [b]

 

23/2/1885 - Son Frank born  [a] born 3am  [d]

 

c 1886 - Son Charles John born, but died as an infant  [a]

 

23/12/1887 - "Charles John" born 11pm to John Henry Burgess and Mary Ann Cooper  [d]

 

11/5/1888 - Son Harry born to John Henry Burgess and Mary Ann Cooper [a]  “born 6am”  [d]

 

23/12/1888 - "Charles John" died aged 8 months  [d]

 

1/11/1889 - Dau Edith born to John Henry Burgess and Mary Ann Cooper [a]  “born 12.30pm”  [d]

16/11/1890 – John Henry Burgess (28, Bach, Stone Mason, father Isaac) married Mary Ann Cooper (38, widow, father Peter Colston), in the Congregational Chapel Shepton Mallet, witns Charles Robert Talbot and Eliza Jane Talbot.   [n]

    (As this is about seven years from the disappearance of Mary Ann’s first husband, it could be that they had him declared legally dead so she was free to re-marry).

5/4/1891 - Living at No 7 Garston St SM was John Henry Burgess (29, "Stonemason [employed]" ), his wife Mary A (36), Stepdau Ada L Cooper (8, Scholar), son Frank (6), son Harry (2), dau Edith (1), and son Willie (2m), all born SM   [r]

    (Living in No 6 was Isaac Burgess his father, and household).

 

5/4/1891 – A Lucy Cooper, 15 (=bn 1876), single, Tobacco Maker, was living in Carman St Bedminster (St Pauls), with her grandfather Joseph Buster, 60 (=bn 1831), bn Somerset, Lime Burner, and his wife Elizabeth, 58.   [r]

    (Joseph Buster doesn’t seem to be in the 1901 Census)

 

31/3/1901 - In census, family living at N0 8 Garston St in Shepton. In the house is John Burgess (40) "Stone mason / Billposter" born SM, his "Wife" Mary (49) born SM, dau Ada (18) "Silk winder", born Wincanton, son Frank (16) "Billposter" born SM, son Harry (12) born SM, dau Edith (11) born SM, son Willie (10) born SM.  (Living at No 6 is John's mother Caroline)   [c]

c 1908 - Son Harry left home to work in the Welsh coal mines  [b]

25/8/1914 - John Henry Burgess died (of a heart attack [b] ) at Shepton Mallet, aged 52, and was buried in the town cemetery with his wife Mary Ann  [a]

 

21/8/1914 - John Henry Burgess, aged 52, a Billposter [Master], died at No 8 Garston St SM, of "Malignant Disease of Liver & Dropsy", inft dau Ada F Cox of 9 Garston St, present at death  [g]

 

21/9/1914 - John Henry Burgess of 8 Garston St SM died  [m]

    The headstone in SM (new) cemetery reads ...

       “In Loving Memory of Mary Ann Burgess, died March 26th 1912, aged 60 years, also of John Henry Burgess, who died August 21st 1914, aged 52 years.”

 

10/10/1914 - John Henry Burgess left ₤44.15.7 in his will, which reads...

   ".. of me John Henry Burgess Billposter of Garston St Shepton Mallet .. appoint Henry James Gardner (a mason) Kings Arms Inn Shepton Mallet to be my executor .. bequeath unto my son Willie and my daughter Ada Florence the household furniture & effects and moneys in Lloyds Bank in equal shares ... "
