24/6/1882 – Admission form for Elizabeth Osborn of Kersbrook, by John Osborn of Kersbrook, “…as a patient into the Asylum under your charge.” She was 39, and her “attack” had occurred at home, and had been lasting for 8 days, said to be caused by “Bodily Weakness”, and was signed off by 2 doctors. Handwritten on the bottom of the form under State On Admission is – “General Health exceedingly frail, bed ridden” and “Mental Condition Dementia from exhaustion”, and then later added “July 2nd 1882 died of brain disease and exhaustion.”

2/7/1882 – death certif Elizabeth Osborn, 39, wife of John Ash Osborn, farmer, of Kersbrook, died of “Brain disease and exhaustion”, died in Adelaide, informant John Paynter, brother of deceased, of Adelaide.

This is a “Story” clip taken from Di Gillman’s John Ash Osborn’s file in Ancestry -

“Elizabeth Osborn nee Paynter – Death

These details were obtained and written about by me in the mid 1980s with source details lost and therefore now needing verification…

After marriage, John’s new wife Elizabeth immediately became pregnant and she continued to have children every 18-24 months. Her seventh and last child, Reuben, was born 11 Jan 1880 and he died from whooping cough nine weeks later. This was extremely distressing for Elizabeth and her health, it would seem both physically and mentally, deteriorated until she was admitted to the Adelaide Asylum on 24 June 1882. The Admission Register records that she was “very weak [with] marks on [her] back, evidently bedsores.”

John had brought her to the hospital in a wagon during the afternoon and he “appeared to take great care of her.” This caring attitude must have been unusual for it to be commented upon in the very brief admission notes. John visited her again that day and also two days later. There do not appear to have been any other visitors before she died on 2 July 1882 of “braind disease and exhaustion” at the age of 39 years.

After Elixabeth’s death, John Ash was left with six children ranging from in age fro 15 down to 3 years. The care of the house and her younger brothers and sisters would have then had to become the responsibility of the eldest daughter Rachel Elizabeth then aged fifteen. Undoubtably she had been in charge of the house and possibly her deteriorating mother for some time.”

1916 – Royal Adelaide Hospital Admissions, Herbert Osborn of Kersbrook, age 39, married, Baptist, born in SA, a Labourer, admitted as an “Emergency” 23/4/1916, disch 18/8/1916 as “Cured” of “Enteric Fever”.

1925? - A photo of “Grandpa & Grandma Osborn at Tcharkuldu Hill Wudinna”. This is Bert and Margaret Osborn, at a granite outcrop ap 3kms east of Minnipa on Eyre Peninsula, and ap 8kms northwest of their farm out the back of Yaninee, and it could’ve only been between mid 1924 and mid 1926. There is a small tree between them that looks a planted sapling, but no idea what its significance is, if any.

Informant Sarah Swensson, daughter, Dora Creek, cause of death consumption, length of illness 3 weeks.

Buried 3 sep 1892 at Cooranbong cemetery (C of E).

NOTES -

The accepted facts are that the father of Francis Foss Pearce was ALEXANDER, but his death details above (clearly him) say that his father was a FRANK Pearce, although there doesn’t seem to be any record of a Frank Pearce marrying a Sarah Foss about the right time in Cornwall, but there is for an Alexander.

The 1841 Census above strongly suggests that this Sally Pearce is “Sarah” Foss, but with no Pearce adult male shown, apparently a widow? This suggests that her husband died some time between say 1830 and 1841, but only there’s only 2 “Alexander” possibles found in Cornwall, but the one who died at Mylor Cwall 31/5/1840 was only 6 yrs old. The other died at Falmouth Cwall Apr-Jun 1840, but no age is shown.

It could simply be that the “Frank” on his death details is just a mistake.

29/11/1946 – Cutting from SA newspaper The Advertiser, concerning the life and memories of Albert Pearce, the son of Francis and Sarah, born at Underdale in Adelaide in 1865, and covers the early days of the family in the northern station country of South Aust.
