a Frederick Burgess, 65 (= bn c1816, his brother?), born SM,

3/4/1881 - Eliza Ivey 51, was living with her husb William,
a Coaker, born 1823 Norwich, and their kids, at 9 Ayton Tce Ystradyfodwg in
Glamorgan Wales. [c]
(One of their
kids, Abraham bn 1865 Aberdare, appears to have married Isaac's daughter Eliza

Wales was an Abraham Burgess (Head, 53, Coalminer, bn SM), and his wife Jane
(50, bn USA) [c]
(There was
nothing of Abraham in '51 or '61, suggesting that this "sailor"
brother of oral history as a young man went to sea for more than 20 years, at
least some of it spent off the east coast of Canada, where he met his wife and
probably married.)

Burgess 70 (=bn c1821), newsvendor and billposter, born Shepton, his wife
Caroline 48 (=bn c1843 ?), born Bruton, a grandson Walter Burridge 12, a
scholar born Bristol, and a lodger [n]
5/4/1891 – Living at No 3a Cusre(?) St in Ffordinair(?)
Aberdare Wales was Abraham Burgess (Head, 63, Underground Engineer, bn SM) and
his wife Jane (59, bn St Johns Newfoundland).
His neighbours were all mostly Coalminers. [n]
Sept Qtr 1892 - An Eliza Burgess mar an Abraham Ivey in
SM [p]
Sept Qtr 1895 - A Jane Burgess, 62 (=bn c1833), died in the
Merthyr Tydfil dist of Glamorgan, which takes in Aberdare. [p]
1897 - Isaac Burgess, newsagent and billposter, 6 Garston

27/5/1899 - Isaac died, aged 74 (=bn c1825), in Shepton,
and was buried in the town cemetery.

newsvendor, one of the best known figures of SM, passed away. For nearly half a century he covered a very
wide round with the Shepton Mallet Journal in every variety of weather, often
not returning home till the early hours of the morning. He continued to follow his calling, still
walking surprising distances, till quite recently. He has used a pony and cart for the last year or two, but went
his rounds till a fortnight before his death, when he gave up the business to
his son. He was 76 years of

(In the house
next door was a William Allwood, a master smith, and his family, and living
with them is an Isaac Burgess, 28 (=bn c1823), born Shepton Mallet. This surely
must be the Isaac Burgess who married a Caroline White in Bruton two and a half
years later, and she is surely the Caroline above?)

With her were grandsons Harry Burridge (22) "Mason" born
Bristol, and Frederick Ivey (7) born Trelaw(?) Sth Wales, and a boarder. Next door(?) at No 8 was her son John Henry
Burgess and his family. [c]
31/3/1901 - Eliz Ivey (bn abt 1829 in SM) was living in
Ystradyfodwg Wales with her son-in-law William Roberts (bn abt 1871 in Wales)
and his wife Matilda (bn Wales) and 3 of their children (all bn Trealaw Wales),
plus an Ivey niece and stepson (of William Roberts) [c]
31/3/1901 - Eliza Ann Ivey (bn abt 1865 in SM) and her
husband Abraham (bn abt 1865 Aberdare Wales) were living in Ystradyfodwg Wales,
with their 3 kids (and a boarder, a Llewellyn Roberts, bn 1858 in Northop

assaulting a neighbour as a result of an argument over the joint use of a
"boiler" (laundry copper?)
