James Horn Osborn & Jane Ash

James Horn OSBORN [002]
Jane ASH [003]
================================
These are the parents of John Ash Osborn, who married Elizabeth Paynter at Kersbrook SA in 1866

>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

9/3/1809 to 8/3/1810 - Jane Ash Osborn (who aged 29 married a James Horn Osborn in Exeter Devon, and had a dau Dinah Sarah], was born to John Ash,a Coachman, in Broadclist Devon.  [n]

11/4/1810 to 10/4/1811 - James Horn Osborne (who aged 29 married a Jane Asche in Star Cross Devon, and had a dau Dinah Sarah), was born to John Osborne a Sailor, in Star Cross Devon.  [n]

31/5/1811 - A `James Osborn' born at Kenton in Devon (south of Exeter), as part of bapt notes below. [a]

16/6/1811 - A `James Osborn' bapt in the parish church at Kenton, the son of John and Dinah Osborn. [a] [f]

c 1812 – The John Osborn who was on the “Velocity” at same time as James and family, was born in Devon   [q]

1/11/1812 - A `Jane Ash' bapt at Broadclyst Devon, parents John Ash and Sarah. [f]

18/7/1813 - A `Dinah Osborne' bapt in Kenton Devon, to John and Dinah Osborn.  Father listed as "Seaman". [a]

c 1814 - A John Osborn born in Devon, who came to SA on the "Velocity" about 1854, and was a tanner at Hindmarsh in 1868 [q]

--------------- MARRIED ----------------

9/3/1838 to 10/4/1839 - Jane Ash Osborn (who had a father John Ash and a dau Dinah Sarah), married in Exeter Devon aged 29, to James Horn Osborn.  [n]

27/5/1839 - A James Horn Osborn married a Jane Ash in Broadclyst Devon. [f]

27/5/1839 - A `James Horn Osborne' married a `Jane Ash' in Broadclyst parish church (just NE of Exeter) in Devon.  James shown as `Full Age (ie, over 21), Bachelor, 'Yeoman' of Starcross (a village 2km south of Kenton, but appeared to be in the Kenton parish until separate church est 1828?), father John Osborne a `Sailor'.  Jane was `Full Age, Spinster' of Broadclyst, father John Ash, a `Labourer'.  Their witnesses were William Kente[r]beer and Mary Ash [probably Jane's younger sister]. [a] [m]
They both signed the register in full, James using `Jas. Horn Osborn' (clearly without an 'e', but its use or otherwise changed regularly in the records over the next 50 years) [a]
The `Parish transcript' says his occupation was a `Yeoman ON the "Starcross"', which might imply a sailor on a ship, but more likely just a misprint.  [j]

c 1840 - James Horn Osborn, who had a dau Dinah Sarah, married in Star Cross Devon, aged 29, to Jane Asche.  [n]

12/3/1840 - A `Dinah Sarah Osborne' born at Kenton Devon, as part of bapt notes below. [a]

29/3/1840 - A `Dinah Sarah Osborne' bapt in the parish church in Kenton, the dau of James and Jane, father listed as `of Southdown Kenton, a Labourer'. [a]

6/6/1841 - A `Jane Osborn' age shown as 25, and a `Hannah Osborn' aged 1, are counted in the same house as John and Sarah Ash [both age 55], and an Elizabeth Ash [age 11], at Budlake near Broadclyst.  There is no James listed with them and can’t find anyone who looks like him anywhere. [b]

Also in 1841 census, James Osborn in “South Town” Kenton (St Thomas parish?), age shown 30, born Devon, with Joseph Ash 20, bn Devon, and Mary Ash 15, bn Devon.  (LDS)
“South Town” is today the sthn half of Kenton

The Ash’s had - 1820 Joseph (ap 21 in 1841), 1823 Mary (ap 18 in 1841)
In the 1841 Census children under 16 showed their correct age, adults 16 and over rounded down to the nearest 5 years.  `25' implied 25 to 29, or born 1816 to 1820.  But Jane would have been 28.  The `Hannah' listed would have been born between July 1839 and June 1840.  But why `Hannah'?  A pet name?  'Dinah' mis-heard?
The Census area header refers to "...from the milestone on the Exeter Road to ....... Bridge, including the cottages at Killerton..." - an estate near Budlake.

c1842 to c1854 - Dau Elizabeth Ellen born, but died as an infant  [n]
(None of their kids births are on St Catherines BMD)

c 4/1842 - Son John Ash born. [c] [h] [n]

c 4/1845 - Dau Mary Jane born. [c] [m] [n]

c 4/1848 - Son James born. [c] [m] [n]

8/7/1849 – James Horn Osborn bapt to James and Ann at Starcross Devon [u]

30/4/1851 – Can’t find the family anywhere in England  [r]
A Thomas Osborn, bn Kenton 1775, wife Grace, in Camberwell Surrey ??

7/3/1855 – Velocity Dep London  (SA Shipping)

23/3/1855 - The ship "Velocity" left Plymouth bound for Sth Aust. [c]

25/6/1855 - The ship "Velocity" docked in Adelaide.  On it were listed together James Osborne 38, married man, trade shown as `Policeman' from ‘St Thomas’ Devon (an occupation verified by Vera Lewis ex oral history), Jane Osborne 37, married woman, John 12, Mary 9, Jas 5.  With the `Single Females' was Dinah Osborne 14, a `Servant' from Devon. [c]
This is undoubtably James Horn Osborn, but his real age was probably 44, and Jane's was actually 42, typically kept below 40.
Also on the ship was a John Osborn, single, labourer, of Devon, aged '22'.  If this is the John who was admitted to RAH in 1868, as having arrived on the Velocity, his age would have been 42 - a misprint?
There was also a Paynter family on the ship, Thomas 29 miner of Devon, wife Anne 26, and 2 girls, but may be of no significance.

  /  /1855 - Colonial Sect letter re refund of Dinah's emigration [j]

c 1856 - James Horn Osborne, who had a dau Dinah Sarah and wife Jane Ash, arrived in the colonies.  [n]

1858 - James (and at least Dinah, and pres Jane), moved to the pioneering riverboat town of Wentworth on the Murray/Darling junction, where he ran Capt Randall’s store at “Randall Town” (refer Dinah’s obit)
    The kids would’ve been Dinah 18, John 16, Mary 13, James 9
There could also be a connection with the riverboat Randells, whose female Beare line also came from Kenton. And James and Jane left their three kids behind in the Gumeracha area, where they later married, and where the Randells had significant property. It was also about the mid 1850s that the Randell son went into the riverboat trade.  [o]

c 1860 - Dinah Sarah Osborn (aged abt 20?), married Llewellyn Geake at Yelta Vic  [p]

4/9/1865 - Mary Jane Osborn, of Kersbrook (aged abt 20?), married John Langley in Kersbrook SA Wesleyan Chapel.   [j]  [t]
