The West Tce Cem (Adelaide) “shared grave”

One (ex early SAGHS?) WTC record suggested three people – Eleanor Hickey (the second wife of “Old” John Hickey), Catherine Hickey (the dau of John and Catherine), and a Richard Oliver John Hickey (the infant son of a Richard Oliver Hickey) are in one grave. This looks incorrect, and WTC records don’t show it anyway. It’s been disregarded in the following.

Dennis Driscoll – witness at their wedding in Kent 10/1869

There is a Dennis “Driscole” in 1871 Census, 4 Returns households away from Hickeys in Erith. He’s 38 (=bn 1833), Labr, bn Co Cork, wife Ellen 40 Co Cork, son John 13 bn Gloucs, dau Margt 14 bn Gloucs, son Daniel 7 bn Erith, son Edw 3 bn Erith. Also his mother Ann 70 (=bn 1801), born Ireland. (Only one other Dennis Driscoll in Erith, but too young).

15/8/1833 – Denis bapt to Florence D & Ann McCarthy, “Creagh & Sullon” RD, witns Harrigtons. Also an Ellen (Baltimore) 28/12/1827, and a Patrick (Baltimore) 12/3/1826.

12/1/1836 – Denis bapt to Jeremiah D & Anna Brickley, “Creagh & Sullon” RD, witns Young and Drsicoll.

This one must have married before 1854, possibles (in Ire) are...

1852 - To Ellen Cahalane, in Kimacabea (Caharah).

1854 – To Ellen Harrigton, in Caharagh (Caulby).

1881 Census – This Dennis is still in Erith with several of his kids, but not his wife, now a widower, farm labr.

1861 Census – can’t see them, when eldest dau s/b 4yo born Gloucs? (altho 1881 says they were all born in Erith!)

BAPTS Ire – to John Driscoll & Mary Donovan of Bandon RD, John 1831, Cath 1834, Tim 1838, Denis 1846.

Ellen Dant – witness at their wedding in Kent 10/1869

The name “Ellen Dant” is really rare, nothing relevant in Census or Marriage, but there’s a birth St Lukes London Jan ¼ 1846 (= age 23)

BAPTS Ire - / /1839 – Ellen Daunt, Enniskeane, to John D & Anne Hurley

Census 1871 – Nothing.

There’s NO Ellen Dant/Daunt married or died in Eng BMD, OR in the Irish Church data, in a reasonable period. Theres NO Ellen(...) marrying a (...)Dant/ Daunt ever, in Eng or Ire.

Deaths Ire – Ellen Daunt died Bandon 1899 age 67, Husb Francis, but theres NO kids born Ire to a Francis Daunt.

This person is a complete mystery! She just appears in 1869, then disappears.

1871 Census - Several households away from Hickeys lived a Daniel O'Leary, labr, (bn abt 1825 Ire), wife Margaret (bn abt 1823 Ire) and two daus Mary 16 (=bn 1855 Erith), Ellen 14 (=bn 1857 Erith) (Only O’Leary family in Erith, and theres a Mary born Dartford Rgn Dist Sept ¼ 1854, and an Ellen born March ¼ 1857).

Daniel O’Leary births all Ire 1820-30, four hits all Castleisland Kerry 1826-29.

Married say 1855?...

29/11/1845 – mar Margt Kelly, Innishannon. Also Ellen (Kinsale) 20/5/1854, witns Santry and Driscoll.

23/5/1851 – mar Margt Hayes, (Burgatia) Rosscarbery.

Immigrants – “Lockee” arr SA Jan 1877 D O’Leary (27 [=bn 1850], mason) wife 2 kids (Trove). This ship is abt the very next to sail for SA (Nov 76 ex Plymouth) after the “Robert Lees”. On the “Lockee” was also a J Daly (28, single, builders labr).

A Daniel O'Leary was shown as a "Constable, Gouger St" in 1885 Directory.

A lot of Daniel O’Leary Trove hits 1875-85 in SA, mainly Mt Gambier, mid north, and Adelaide.

24/10/1854 – Arr on "Lord Raglan" (ship 54/23), dep Plymouth 16/7/1854, on board (in one grouping, all "Irish") is Patrick Hickey, Labourer (33 = bn c1821), Mary (32 =bn c1822), James (2 =bn c 1852 not in SA), and Margaret (1, =bn c1853, the only death on the voyage out). With them appears to be Patrick Bryan 24 (=bn c1830), Irish, Labourer (as the Hickeys and Bryan were all sponsored by a John Murhpy, and another person unreadable, and the Hickeys are twice listed immed after Bryan within a 'B' alpha sequence. IF the witness James here is her brother (bn c1852) who arr on the ship, then he is NOT James #4, because James #4’s father Patrick was dead when James #4 re-married in 1900, and there are no Patrick deaths in SA between 1886 (Mary Ann’s mar) and 1900 (James #4’s re-marriage).

(Is this James #1 enrolling son James Charles??? The age is a bit out as he would only be 9yrs-3mn old, not 11. “Sisters School” – most likely the Josephite nuns who ran a school next to the St Mary’s Catholic Church in Pt Ad)

12/7/1874 – An Alfred Hickey, the son of James Hickey who was a labourer living in Rosewater in 1881, was born (Pt Adelaide School Enrols)

(This birth not in SA Indexes, but maybe not regd. OR maybe this is James #1 ARRIVING between July 1874 and March 1876, WITH a son Alfred ???)

?/10/1881 - A James Hickey, labourer of Rosewater, enrolled son Alfred (bn 12/7/1874) at Pt Adelaide school (Public Primary?), trsfd from Infant school (Pt Adelaide School Enrols)

This Alfred (John) Hickey had mental problems. He was arrested in Pt Aug 1895 (age 23) after attempting suicide, then arrested in London Feb 1898 for firing a revolver in the Gaiety Theatre, at which time he said (and was verified) that he was from SA, had a grandmother “Mrs Porter” who had a son-in-law James Hickey of Elizabeth St Rosewater, who was his father. He was arrrested again in June 1903 for attempted murder (full data in “TroveSA_Hickey” file).

Did this James marry a Porter girl, say c 1870, the dau of “Mrs Porter” above ??? There’s nothing in the SA Mar Index.

A Johanna Mary Porter 63 (=bn 1836) of Port Rd Queenstown, wife of WJ Porter (shopkeeper, Chairman of Queenstown & Alberton Bldg Soc 1885, had a farm at Balhanna in 1890) bur 14/1/1899 at Chelt (no site). Death Notice says died suddenly on 12^th. Funeral Notice 13/1/1899 says from home at Port Rd Queenstown. (Trove)

JOHN HICKEY #1 (Did this John Hickey have any connection at all??)

SUMMARY - Bn Cork c1805-1810 (father Patrick #4 above, who was a plasterer in 1838).

Before 1838 he married and wife died. In 1838 he was a plasterer living in London, remarried widow Eleanor Thompson (nee Ford) in Greyfriars London. She had son John and dau Ellen at mar. They had dau Mary Ann c1839, son Thomas c1840 St Andrews Holborn, arr SA “Mary Green” 1853, appears to have died in Adelaide dist 29/5/1868, widow Eleanor may have died 25/12/1886 Kent Town. WTC data says she was bur 27/12/1886 aged 80, but nothing else, and “Site Unknown”. (ref sep file below)

(This HAS to be Richard's wife, RE-marrying, but described as a "widow". This is only 3 years after the birth of the 9mo child who died, but NO SA deaths 1884-87 of a R O Hickey !!)

before 1893 – A Richard Oliver Hickey may have married (or de facto-ed ??) a Mary Ann Wilson.

There is no marriage shown for these two in the SA Mars Index.

IF the Mary Ann Wilson who was at the Hickey wedding was both the mother of the first two boys, AND of the following four kids, it had to be de facto. But, IF the first two boys had a different mother, who died say 1892, then Richard would’ve been free to re-marry (assuming she wasn’t already married). IF Richard and his first wife simply seperated, it may explain the de facto that followed.

No matter what else, this Richard Oliver Hickey looks like the father of all six kids. The fact that the first two are not registered, but the next four are, suggests a “break” of some sort ??

This suggests that Richard MAY have been in the Port area in 1891 (to meet up with Mary Ann), but then spent 1893 to 1896 in the city, as a labourer and then a plasterer, then moved to Pt Adelaide for a year or two, before returning to the city.

Without sighting the pre-1872 books, there’s only a few 1872-1883 SA Directory entries for Hickeys, but none of these in Adelaide or Pt Adelaide area. Most early ones are in the mid-north.

The only interesting Adelaide city one is 1884-85 W J Hickey, Divett St, Blacksmith, but the name doesn’t become very numerous until the 1900s.
