emigrated to South Aust.

GRIFFITHS (1847-1864) and TITHES
(1823-1837)
Most of the
Griffiths entries below are from 1852-1854, and the Tithes from 1832-1835. This
means The Famine is in between these two sets of land-renting “census” figures.
The three most
prolific TITHES Parishes for
Hickeys (in Co Cork) are Cullen (adjoin south of Kilmeen) and Nohavaldaly
(adjoin west of Kilmeen) in Duhallow, (plus Kilcoe down in Schull area).
The most
prolific GRIFFITHS Parishes for
Hickeys (with 10 or more hits, in Co Cork) are Cullen (31), St Annes Shandon
(Cork City?) (14), Kilmeen (both) (11), Nohavaldaly (10), Kilcoe (down in
Schull area) (10).
HICKEY (in KILMEEN Parish, mostly on Map 72)
Kilmeen parish
itself has only one Hickey TITHES
entry (1834), for a Cons (Cornelius?) Hickey at Islandbrack, being 22
acres of Coarse Pasture (attached to a John Horgan holding?). Reardon is the
most prolific name in Islandbrack Tithes.
The 1852 GRIFFITHS for Kilmeen Parish shows
only two (the same?) Andrew Hickey entries, at Knockmanagh, to Margt
McAuliffe, and to James McAuliffe.
There are only 8
other Griffiths Kilmeen parish Hickeys –

OTHER RELATED DATA
The Kilmeen
parish in the Barony of Duhallow is just about all in Ord Map 72, goes east
(takes in Ballyhoolihan) nearly to Kanturk, to Clashakinleen on the northern
edge, and west nearly to Ballydesmond.
The town of
Boherbue, and the townland of Glashakinleen, are in the Kilmeen parish of Co
Cork (that is, the northern Kilmeen, in the Barony of Duhallow), and the 1871
Census-taker wrote that John’s place of birth was “Killmene” in Co Cork. At
that time it seems John was illiterate. There are no records of a John bapt to
an Andrew in the southern Kilmeen parish in the relevant years.
The Hickey name
is fairly prolific in this whole Slieve Lochra area, as is their use of the
first name Andrew. The Hickeys are today said to have been blacksmiths in the
1800s, and there are old Hickey smithys still standing in Gneevguilla,
Knockduff, and Lisnaboy, which all join Kilmeen parish to the south.
There is a
“Hickey rath” at Lisnaboy that’s said to be the original Hickey farmstead (but
no era mentioned), opp the old Hickey smithy which is still owned by a Liam
Hickey, who says John and Andrew are both traditionally-used names in “their
Hickey family” (as against the Hickeys from over in Ahane area).
DAN BATTIE HICKEY
On the “Living Voices” CD by Dan Battie Hickey (recorded 2002,
he looks about 60-65) he says that the Hickeys came from Cullen and Lisnabee,
that they came down from Co Clare (historically?) and settled in Cullen
(parish?), in 5-6 townlands down there, but (in time?) became too numerous for
down there, so (Dan’s?) grandfather went to Mountcain when it came up for
letting in 1825 and he got over 200 acres of land there and farmed. He was
certainly there in 1830 (Tithes).
But “We’re really Kerry people here” (that is, those that lived
near the Blackwater River border, as that area was originally in Kerry).
He also says his grandfather was born around the time the
school was built in Knocknagree, around 1840. It was my “great-grandfather” that came up from
Lisnabee in 1825, and his(?) father was an Andy Hickey, and there’s a headstone
in the Cullen burial place to him, “he died in 1870, 1870 48 (??) something
like that, he was 76 years of age”.
Dan Battie (born
abt 1940) says his grandfather was born about 1840 (presumably in Knocknagree,
where Dan Battie lived at the time of the recording, but hard to fit that to
Dan’s birth?), and his great-grandfather went from Lisnabee to Mountcain in
1825 (pres as an adult as he seems to be in the 1830 Tithes) was he say 25 and
so born say 1820 (and HIS father was an Andrew Hickey??).
