John EVANS [ 006 ] (below)
Ann CHAPMAN [ 007 ] (following)
=====================
These are the parents of Elizabeth Anne
Evans, who married William Bennett Edmonds in 1838 and emigrated to South Aust.
>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
c. 1785 - Born (assume
similar age as wife) [a]
------------------
MARRIED ------------------
c. 1810/1815 ? -
Married Ann Chapman [guess]
1812 – In the Poll
Books for Bristol is listed a “John Evans Accountant” of St Augustine Place,
Bristol [e]
(There is NO entry for this person in the
1830 Poll Books)
30/3/1812 – A Frances
Mary Evans was bapt (bn 4/2/1812) to a John Evans and Ann his wife (no maiden
name) at St Augustine-the-less in Bristol
[e] [g]
24/12/1815 – An
Elizabeth Ann Evans was bapt (“performed by James Carter Curate”) to a John
Evans and Ann his wife (no maiden name) at St Augustine-the-less in
Bristol, father and “Accountant” of St Augustine Place [e]
(There is no marriage entry in the Avon
CRO area that corresponds to the above couple, for either “Bristol & Sth
Gloucs” or “Nth Somerset”. But Elizabeth, the wife of Wm B Edmonds, had NO
siblings. And as much as both of the above look tempting, I’ve seen the will of
this John Evans and he’s definitely NOT William Bennett Edmonds’s
father-in-law).
before 1817? – The
Elizabeth Ann Evans who married William Bennett Edmonds in 1838 born ? [c]
20/4/1821 to 19/4/1821
- Dau Elizabeth Ann born [b]
15/3/1838 - Dau
Elizabeth Ann mar William Edmonds in the parish church in Poplar (in London's
east end) where she " resided".
John was a "Silkwinder" on Eliz's mar certif ? (that part is now missing from the original
and this comes from old family notes included with EHE family records,
presumably once able to be seen) [c]
(The church is/was All Saints, cnr Newby
Place & East India Dock Rd, Poplar)
(Both Elizabeth and William’s ages
shown as “Of Full Age”, which implies
over 21?)
15/3/1838 to 1840? –
Taking into account the length of time a letter from Eng to SA took, AND when
Elizabeth the dau and her husb W B Edmonds came back to Eng to take the widow
Evans back to SA with them, it’s reasonable to assume that John may have died
in this period, that is, between dau's marriage (when he was still alive) and
the wife's leaving for SA.
June ¼ 1838 – There are
two John Evans dying in Bethnal Green
[d]
(Neither of these look like him)
Dec ¼ 1838 – There is a
John Evans death in St George Hanover Sq
[d]
(This is also not him, being a 40 yo
Coachman who died in the St George’s Hospital)
March ¼ 1839 - A John
Evans died in Bristol (Vol XI Pg 139)
[d]
(There is a John Evans will in the
Bristol Wills Index, which is NOT his) [e]
(There are also two Bristol deaths in
1844, and one in 1854, which are also NOT him)
Sept ¼ 1839 - There is
a John Evans death in St George Hanover Sq
[d]
Dec ¼ 1844 – This is
only John Evans death in Poplar from 1837 to end of 1845 [d]
(This date doesn’t fit the 15/3/1838 to
1840? argument above)

--------------- SPOUSE
DIED ------------------
15/3/1838 to 1840? -
Her husband John may have died in this period, between dau's marriage (still
alive) and Anne's return to SA with dau and son-in-law. [xx]
Jan to March 1839 - A
John Evans died in Bristol [c]
(This is the only one in St Caths Index
that fits timeline, but if he was ill wouldn't it be more likely that they
would've stayed in the London area where Anne had some family support?)
/12/1839 - Dau Elizabeth and son-in-law
William Edmonds arr back in England, spending at least some time in Bristol
area. [xx]
Jan to March 1840 ? - A

Independant Means, born Wilts, lived in Church Yard, B-on-A [d]
7/6/1841 – Living at
(“No 31”) Lower Belgrace Place (“Cundys Wharf”) in St Georges Westminster was
William Chapman (50, Merchant, NO bitc), and Isabel (looks like “Mabel”) (50,
YES bitc) and a 20 yo female servant
[d]
7/6/1841 - Living at
(“No 32”) Lower Belgrave Place (“Cundys Wharf”) in St Georges Westminster was
Joseph Lambert (35, Merchant, NO bitc), Mary Lambert (40 YES b.i.t.c.), Josephine
Lambert (5, YES bitc), Rebecca Lambert (80, YES bitc), and a 55 yo female
servant [d]
9/7/1845 - William
Henry Chapman of Notting Hill, a timber merchant in partnership with his
brother-in-law Joseph Lambert (co-executor) in the Pimlico wharves area, writes
a will leaving BP100 to "sister Ann Evans .. of Adelaide Sth Aust" on
the condition she return to England. He
also mentions his brother Richard James Chapman, a farmer of Haddenham Bucks,
his wife Isabel (co-executor), his nephew John Chapman (in his employ, who
seems to get all of William's business interests aside from an annuity for his
wife), and a married niece Mary Scott.
[j]
17/9/1845 - Ann's
brother William Henry Chapman died (presumably in England) [f]
11/10/1845 - Only 3
months after making the will, it is "Proved" (implying recent death
of testator).

William Henry Chapman died "St Georges Han Sq" (which is an admin
area NE of Pimlico) [c]
30/3/1851 - At

ac, 5 Labs), born Cuddington, his wife Ann (44) born Towersey (nearby), and 7
kids (3-18) all born Haddenham. One son is named William H. [e]
(Based on age dif this couple, and that
William didn't appear to have any children, and if this was William's only
brother, then the nephew John who works for William in 1845, and inherits so
much, must be Richard's, presumably his eldest? Or possibly an only son from an earlier marriage?)
30/5/1851 - Living in
one house in Hanover Sq London, Isabel Chapman, Head, bn 1786 Westminster, with
a Louisa Eaton "Companion", bn 1804 Windsor (there is a Caroline
